Frequently asked questions

What is the easiest high-protein snack to make at home?

Greek yogurt with a scoop of whey and some berries takes about 5 minutes and gives roughly 35 to 40 g of protein. For a savory option, a tuna pouch on seed crackers with cucumber gives about 20 g. Neither needs cooking, and both use pantry or fridge staples.

Can you make beef jerky at home in under 2 hours?

Yes, if you slice lean eye of round 1/8 inch thick, simmer the strips in the marinade until they reach 160°F as USDA FSIS advises, then dry them on racks in a 170–200°F convection oven for about 55 minutes. Thicker classic jerky still takes 4 to 8 hours.

How much protein should a homemade snack have?

Aim for 15 to 25 g of protein in 150 to 300 calories for a homemade snack that keeps you full until the next meal. Our rankings of store-bought snacks use a stricter test: at least 10 g of protein in under 200 calories, with 5 g of sugar or less.

How long do homemade protein snacks last?

Most cooked protein snacks, such as egg bites and turkey meatballs, keep 3 to 4 days in a fridge at 40°F or below and about 2 to 3 months in the freezer. No-bake protein balls keep 1 to 2 weeks chilled. Homemade jerky keeps about 1 to 2 weeks in the fridge.
